Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye
NF 600/165296, VAW-115
USS George Washington, 2010
The Northrop E-2 Hawkeye is an all-weather airborne early warning aircraft (AEW). The E-2 was
a twin-turboprop developed in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s for the USN. The E-2 is a carrier-
capable aircraft and has received major upgrades in their electronics for the E-2B and E-2C with
the E-2C also receiving improved turbo-prop engines. The E-2 has been in production since the
1960’s making it the longest production run of any carrier based aircraft. The E-2C variant
became operational in 1973.

VAW-115 “Liberty Bells” was commissioned on April 20, 1967. In 2008 E-2C Hawkeye 165296
C/N A52-167 was one of the USS Kitty Hawk’s Liberty Bells aircraft that transferred to the
USS George Washington. By 2010 VAW-115 had amassed eight Battle Efficiency E’s, seven
AEW Excellence Awards and six Safety S’s. In 2010 the Liberty Bells began to receive the newer
E-2C Hawkeye 2000. 2012 was a bad year for 165296, on September 4 the port wing was
damaged and on December 9 the starboard wing was damaged.
