In 1967 the U.S. became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it necessary to develop a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat and issued its own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January 1976 the first Eagle entered service. The "E" entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.
The first operational wing with the F-15A/B Eagle was the 1st FW based at Langley AFB in 1976 and lasted until 2005 when replaced by the F-22A Raptor. McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle 83- 0017 c/n 864/C277 was delivered new to the 58th TFS/33rd TFW on August 1, 1984 but transferred to the 71st FS (Ironmen) / 1st FW at Langley AFB in October 1987. On June 11, 2007 during a “Red Flag” exercise in Alaska; 83-0017 collided mid-air with an F-16C. The F-15 pilot ejected safely and the F-16C managed to land.
