The North American F-100 Super Sabre served the USAF from 1954 to 1971
shortened version of “one hundred” was the first US fighter capable of
attaining supersonic speed in level flight. The Hun was used extensively as
close-air-support in South Vietnam. The F-100 suffered from landing gear and
brake parachute failures, electrical problems, 500 of the 1,274 F- 100Ds that
were built were lost mostly due to these failures.

Prior to belonging to the 188th TFG of the Arkansas ANG aircraft 55-3616 c/n 223-298
was the property of the 20th TFW/ 77th TFS that had been stationed at RAF
Wethersfield. In 1969 the 77th and 20th moved to RAF Upper Heyford and transitioned to
the F-111. Prior to receiving the F-100D in 1972 the 188th was designated 188th TRG
(Tactical Reconnaissance Group) but with the “Huns” came the new designation 188th
TFG “Flying Razorbacks”. They flew the F-100D until 1979 when they transitioned to the
F-4C.
