The first production RF- 4C flew in May 1964. The RF- 4C was an unarmed recon variant designed for information gathering. This variant is quite easy to recognize from other F-4 variants because of the distinctive nose. The larger nose was designed to accommodate radar, sensors and flat windows for cameras. During its years of service the RF-4C used two nose rounded camera bulge. There were 503 RF- 4cs built with 499 being officially accepted by the USAF.
The 10th TRW (Tactical Reconnaissance Wing) was formerly based at Spangdahlem AB, West Germany was relocated to RAF Alconbury, UK arriving on August 25, 1959. In 1965 the 10th TRW received their RF- 4C Phantom IIs. From the mid 1960’s until 1971 the USAF stared using Tail Codes. Aircraft at Alconbury were assigned “AR”, “AS”, “AT” but these weren’t applied until before this method was cancelled. All Alconbury aircraft wore “AR” on the tail and 1 TRS had a blue tip on the tail while 30 TRS had red and 32 TRS wore yellow. RF- 4C-23-MC 64-1077 c/n 1144 was the last aircraft produced in a block of 16 aircraft. After serving its time with the 10th TRW it eventually made its way to the Minnesota ANG/148th TRG. The last owners of 64-1077 were the Alabama ANG and wore BH on the tail. On April 14, 1994 the aircraft was accepted at AMARC and stored as AA FP0954.
