You ask, we listen - Safelog for iPhone is coming soon!
July, 2008: Some of you with shiny new Apple iPhones have asked us about a version of our popular Safelog Pilot Logbook software for your iPhones. We're happy to announce we're now hard at work on this and should have it ready for you before too long.
Well, actually, let's make something clear - in some sense, Safelog for iPhone is ALREADY available. You see, there is another company who claims to offer their pilot logbook software for iPhone - actually, they do no such thing. Rather, taking advantage of the data plan that most iPhone users have, they simply provide a web portal for their logbook product which you can navigate to using your iPhone. You really have to read between the lines of their website to recognize that this is indeed what they are offering and not software that runs on your iPhone itself.
While we can't say we approve of hinting that a web service is actually software, In the final analysis, this is not a bad way to go as far as iPhone is concerned. In fact, this is the same approach that our iPhone offering will take. Even more than this, we already offer this via our SafelogWeb.com online pilot logbook service.
But, let's be clear here:
As of this writing (July 10, 2008), we currently offer SafelogWeb, our online logbook service, as a companion to our PC software. However, we are hard at work finalizing this so that people can alternately choose to use it as a stand-alone product (that is, so you can if you choose log on the web only, and not bother with the PC software). This process of making it stand-alone is proceeding smoothly and should be released in the next few weeks, the vacations of a few of us notwithstanding.
If you're an existing SafelogWeb user now, you can already right now log in to SafelogWeb using your iPhone's web browser. If you're not a Safelog Pc user for example, because you're a Mac user, you'll be able to in a few weeks log in to SafelogWeb using either your Mac's web browser or your iPhone's. That's right - this means that, unlike with our competitors, iPhone support wont cost any more from us.
However, for the immediate present, this means that you'll be viewing SafelogWeb pages over your iPhone that were designed for desktop PCs - as you know, your iPhone can probably handle these, but it may be a bit clumsy. So, our project after that will be to make an iPhone-specific portal for SafelogWeb that has simplified pages better suited for use on mobile devices such as iPhone. This work is more a simplification than anything else, so we don't anticipate it taking too long.
Just a reminder: Safelog offers more than any other pilot logbook software. Don't be fooled by every manner of misdirection out there - nobody comes close to our ease of use and flexibility. Have a look at Safelog for PC if you can (by the way Mac users - it does run on "Windows on Mac" tools such as Fusion) and compare it to anything else feature by feature. Try the demo of SafelogWeb.com, too, and you'll soon see what we mean.
So, please be patient and understand that soon you'll have our powerful logbook system at your fingertips.
Thanks and all the best,
The Dauntless Aviation Safelog team
